Satochip

Satochip is a hardware wallet made by Satochip S.R.L., a company based in Belgium. It takes the form of a credit card-sized smart card with an embedded NFC chip.

The card uses an EAL6+ certified secure element chip to generate and store private keys. The chip includes a co-processor and tamper-proof memory. According to the manufacturer, private keys cannot be extracted from the chip. The card is described as water and shock resistant.

Access to the card requires a PIN code between 4 and 16 characters. After several incorrect PIN attempts, the card blocks access. An optional 2FA mobile application can be used to validate transactions on a separate device. Each card includes a cryptographic mechanism for verifying its authenticity through a digital certificate checked against a trusted PKI.

Satochip follows the BIP32 and BIP39 standards. A new address is generated after each transaction. Setup requires initializing the card with a personal seed phrase. The wallet supports Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, ERC-20 tokens, and other EVM-compatible network assets, covering more than 1,000 cryptocurrencies and tokens in total.

The card connects to a computer through a smart card reader or to a phone via NFC. It works with software clients including Sparrow Wallet, Electrum, Electrum-LTC, Uniblow, BitcoinKeeper, and Rabby Wallet, and supports the WalletConnect protocol for DeFi and Web3 access. Supported platforms include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The card is not locked to a single vendor or software client.

All firmware and software are released as open source under the AGPLv3 license. The source code is published on the manufacturer’s GitHub repository.

The card can also be loaded onto a compatible JavaCard smartcard for use with SeedSigner hardware, using a separate extension kit sold by the manufacturer.
