Tangem Wallet is a hardware wallet made by Tangem AG, based in Zug, Switzerland. The wallet takes the form of a plastic card with no battery, no screen, and no buttons. It connects to a smartphone using NFC and is powered entirely by the phone during a tap.
A set consists of two or three identical cards. Each card holds the same private key, generated using a true random number generator inside the secure element chip. During setup, the cards link to each other using end-to-end encryption to transfer the key between them. Any single card in the set provides full wallet access on its own. Cards cannot be added to a set after the initial setup is completed.
The secure element is a certified chip developed with Samsung Semiconductors, certified to EAL6+. Tangem states that no card has been hacked since launch in 2017. The chip and antenna make up the entire internal structure of the card, with no other internal components.
By default, the wallet operates without a seed phrase. The private key is generated and stored directly inside the chip and never leaves it. A traditional recovery phrase remains available as an optional method: a phrase can be generated through the Tangem app and imported to the device, or an existing phrase from another wallet can be imported instead. Access to the card is also protected with a user-set access code, which has a minimum length of six characters.
The card is rated IP69K, described by the manufacturer as fully waterproof and pressure-resistant. It is also stated to resist X-rays, electromagnetic pulses, and electrostatic discharge, in line with ISO 7816-1, and to operate in temperatures from -25°C to 50°C. The card carries a 25-year limited hardware warranty.
The companion Tangem app handles balance tracking, sending, receiving, buying, selling, swapping, and staking. The app is described by the manufacturer as open source, with its code published on GitHub. The wallet firmware itself has been independently audited by Kudelski Security and Riscure. The app connects to DeFi protocols and decentralized exchanges through WalletConnect and is available for iOS and Android.
The wallet supports more than 14,100 assets across more than 90 blockchain networks. Tangem AG states that it does not run servers to process blockchain transactions and does not collect personal data. Tangem AG is not regulated as a financial services provider or a cryptocurrency exchange and does not hold, custody, or control user funds.
